He continued, “I just think that was a really important thing for us to see as a community, and I look back on that very often with pride. I think it’s really, really beautiful that he handled it that way.”

When Michael came out, during a CNN interview shortly after his arrest in a public bathroom for a “lewd act,” he stated, “I want to say I have no problem with people knowing that I’m in a relationship with a man right now.” He continued, “I don’t feel any shame. I feel stupid, and I feel reckless and weak for having allowed my sexuality to be exposed this way. But I don’t feel any shame whatsoever.”
Michael, who was the lead singer of Wham!, died in 2016 at the age of 53. He won four VMA awards throughout his career and created countless iconic songs, like “Careless Whisper,” “Faith,” “Father Figure,” and “One More Try.” His debut album, Faith, became one of the best-selling albums of all time and won a Grammy Award for Album of the Year. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2023.
