Right-hander Corbin Burnes has gone through a pair of injury-ravaged seasons since he joined the Diamondbacks on a seven-year, $210MM deal before the 2025 campaign.
Burnes underwent Tommy John surgery in June 2025, limiting him to 11 starts and 64 1/3 innings in the first year of the contract. He then suffered a teres major strain in his shoulder during his rehab this past June, which prevented him from returning to the majors until Sept. 8. After Burnes made just three starts and tossed 10 1/3 frames, he went back on the injured list with shoulder inflammation and missed the final week of the Diamondbacks’ season.
Fortunately for Burnes and the Diamondbacks, he does not expect his shoulder to cause problems going forward. The 31-year-old said Monday he is dealing with a tired shoulder – not a new injury – and will recover with rest (via Steve Gilbert of MLB.com). While Burnes is awaiting another opinion, it does not appear he will need surgery, Jack Sommers of SI.com relays.
Had Burnes returned during the summer and looked like his four-time All-Star and 2021 NL Cy Young-winning self down the stretch, he would have had an interesting offseason decision to make. Burnes will have a chance to opt out of his contract and walk away from $140MM, but that appears highly unlikely to happen in the wake of a lost year and a half. The fact that he and his family already owned a home in Scottsdale before he signed with Arizona seems to make it even less probable that he will return to the market over the winter.
Burnes pitched to a stingy 2.66 ERA during his abbreviated first year in Arizona, but he posted a bloated 7.84 mark and lost around 2 mph of velocity over a much smaller sample of work this September. Assuming Burnes sticks with the Diamondbacks in 2027, returning to something resembling his pre-injury form would be a major boost for a team now mired in a three-year playoff drought.
The D-backs went a solid 86-76 this season and finished two games out of a Wild Card spot despite a rotation that ranked 19th in ERA (4.28) and 24th in fWAR (7.9). Burnes, Eduardo Rodriguez, Merrill Kelly and Brandon Pfaadt are all in line to return next season, while Michael Soroka and Zac Gallen are impending free agents. Soroka pitched to an effective 3.41 ERA this year, but injuries held him to 116 innings. Meanwhile, Gallen endured a disastrous 2026 after re-signing on a one-year, $22.025MM deal last winter. Gallen’s 6.07 ERA in 105 1/3 frames played a key part in Arizona’s failure to clinch a playoff berth.
