Famed wrestler Benjamin Satterley died at age 40 over the weekend, just after he competed in a match in Chicago.
The death of Satterley, who was known as “Pac,” was announced late Sunday on All Elite Wrestling’s website.
“A native of Newcastle upon Tyne, England, Satterley began his wrestling career in 2004 and went on to perform for wrestling organizations all over the world, captivating fans with innovative high-flying moves and incredible in-ring ability,” the group wrote in a message on social media. “Pac signed with All Elite Wrestling in 2019 and held multiple AEW Championships and competed in some of the most memorable matches in AEW history. Our condolences go out to Satterley’s family, friends and fans.”
Satterley competed and lost to Andrade El Ídolo on Saturday in Chicago in the AEW National Championship.
The Cook County Medical Examiner’s office confirmed Satterley died in Des Plaines, just outside of Chicago. Both the medical examiner and All Elite Wrestling did not list a cause of death, however.
Satterley began his wrestling training when he was 18 after developing an interest for the sport through his aunt, who was a fan of the WWF, according to MN2S, his booking agency.
He quickly rose to prominence, earning nicknames like “The Super Superman” and “The Man That Gravity Forgot.” He began his international journey in 2007 and wrestled under the name of Adrian Neville from 2012 to 2018.
After signing with AEW, he became the inaugural AEW International Champion and a two-time AEW World Trios Champion.
Tributes for Satterley have poured in.
“The greatest export from our country. Also the greatest human being,” wrote fellow wrestler Will Ospreay on X. “Honored to have shared the ring with you so many times. You truly are such a hero to myself and many others.”
“I am in shock. This is heartbreaking,” AEW wrestler Evil Uno said. “We have lost another great person, a great soul, a true professional.”
“I don’t understand man,” wrote Ace Austin, whom Satterley defeated on a special episode of AEW’s “Collision” program last week.
“To many, he was a bastard,” AEW referee Bryce Remsburg wrote on X. “To my kids, he was Ben — who brought them Kinder Eggs from the UK, who converted them to Newcastle fans. To me, he was an incredible friend for 20 years.”
Death Riders stablemate Marina Shafir spoke during an indie show Sunday night calling Satterley “was our bastard,” NBC News reported.
“I was just holding this man yesterday,” she said, growing emotional as she recalled talking with Satterley about “wiener dogs” and basketball courts.
“He was just so modest about how fascinating he was. …. I wouldn’t be here today if I didn’t share time and space with this man,” she said.
