With September action coming to a close and the FCS season growing more important by the week, here were the loudest victories during Week 4:
St. Thomas (50-17 over San Diego)
The Tommies (4-1) got the result you might expect on Homecoming Day. Only they didn’t bring in a cupcake, their win was over the Pioneer Football League preseason favorite and marked San Diego’s largest league defeat since 2000. Quarterback Nick Peipert accounted for five touchdowns (three passing, two rushing) and the Tommies averaged 10.3 yards per offensive play.
Colgate (28-21 over No. 23 Villanova)
During an impressive start to the season, Colgate still lacked a signature win. Not anymore as the Raiders ended an eight-game losing streak to Villanova, a 2025 FCS playoff semifinalist. Jake Stearney passed for three touchdowns while leading a 15-minute, 16-second advantage in time of possession. The Raiders (4-1, 3-0 Patriot) didn’t commit a turnover after having 10 in their first four games. Linebacker Trooper Price (nine tackles, 2.5 TFLs, 1.5 sacks) fueled the physical defense.
No. 11 Youngstown State (47-28 over No. 8 South Dakota)
Facing the prospect of falling below .500 and to a second MVFC loss, Youngstown State (3-2) never trailed against a Coyotes squad that had been impressive this season. The defense forced three turnovers that led to 17 points and linebacker Graydon Rollins racked up 17 tackles. Quarterback Beau Brungard had his usual big game with 329 total yards and four total touchdowns.
ETSU (58-31 over Western Carolina)
An upset loss to Campbell in the season opener doesn’t look so bad for ETSU now given the Camels’ rise this season. Even better, the Buccaneers looked really good in dismantling Western Carolina to stake itself as a contender in the competitive Southern Conference. The 58 points were their most against an FCS opponent since 2003, and they racked up a season-high 542 yards. Jason Albritton scored on three short touchdown runs.
Northern Iowa (28-21 over No. 3 Illinois State)
UNI posted its first Top 25 win since 2023 and ended Illinois State’s 11-game road winning streak. With the Panthers coming off back-to-back losing records for the first time since 1981 and ’82, their win was the biggest in coach Todd Stepsis’ second season. Quarterback Jaxon Dailey accounted for 261 yards and three TDs in the upset.
