ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The heavier rainbands of the Nor’easter have already started to take aim at New England and the Mid-Atlantic. Coastal flooding and storm surge (inundation) is of top concern from Massachusetts all the way down to the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Being so far inland, Rochester and the rest of Western New York will see very minor impacts, but that doesn’t mean your Sunday plans will not be affected by this storm.
Partly to mostly cloudy skies and dry weather will stick around Rochester, the Finger Lakes, and the Southern Tier through Saturday evening. Low temperatures will reach the upper-50s for Rochester, while parts of the Southern Tier may drop into the upper-40s. Winds will generally stay breezy out of the north/northeast. The Finger Lakes and eastern Southern Tier will be the first to see Sunday’s Nor’easter-driven rain showers. Early morning through about mid-morning looks okay, but cloudy. Yates and Ontario County will likely see their earliest showers in the later morning hours. These peripheral rainbands will then continue to move from east to west across Western New York. The southern extent of this band will likely move through the Southern Tier starting in the morning hours as well. Then, Rochester will start to see these rainbands in the early to mid-afternoon. From there, the lighter portion of these bands will start to move into Buffalo and Orchard Park in the late afternoon to early evening hours.
How will this impact your plans? If you are heading to the Finger Lakes for fall festivals or Grape Fest, expect rain to start moving in midday. These showers may be widespread and will likely linger through the early evening hours. If you are heading to the Bills game at Highmark Stadium, expect the first half of the game to be mostly dry besides a spotty light shower. Then, expect increasing rain chances and coverage through the third and fourth quarters. The higher rain amounts are expected to stay in Cayuga, Yates, eastern Ontario, and southern Wayne County, where it will be possible to see an upper-limit of 1 to 1.5 inches. Rochester is expected to get between 0.25 to 0.5 inches. Orchard Park and Buffalo are expected to catch the lightest of the rain, likely staying under a quarter of an inch. Keep in mind that widespread cloud cover and windy conditions will make it a bit chilly. Winds will stay out of the northeast. Sustained winds will likely hover between 10 and 20 mph while wind gusts could fluctuate from 20 to 30 mph. Higher elevations and along the south shore of Lake Ontario, 30 to 35 mph gusts may be possible.
