In 1982, Sylvester Stallone was in extraordinary shape for Rocky III, but more than four decades later, the actor is revealing the troubling reality behind his famous physique.
Stallone, who turned 80 in July, made the stunning confession in a candid new interview with The New York Times while discussing his relationship with his body and the physical toll his decades as an action star have taken.
The actor said his body initially became a kind of “armor” as his characters evolved from the relatively ordinary-looking Rocky Balboa into increasingly muscular action heroes.
For Rocky III, however, Stallone said that pursuit became an unhealthy obsession.
“It got to the point where I became bulimic,” Stallone revealed. “You heard it here first.”
Stallone said he got down to just 2.6 percent body fat while making the third Rocky movie and struggled to keep food down because he had become so fixated on maintaining his level of fitness.
The actor also spoke candidly about using steroids to achieve his action-star physique, telling the outlet that a body like his at the time wasn’t attainable naturally. But Stallone now acknowledges that the years he spent pushing his body to extremes came at an enormous cost.
“I’ve abused my body,” he said.

Stallone revealed that he has undergone nine back operations, two shoulder operations and three neck fusions. Although he still wants to remain in good shape at 80, he said his attitude toward fitness has changed dramatically.
“If I could do it over again,” Stallone admitted, “I would say, ‘Let someone else carry the banner and don’t do your own stunts.'”
The Rambo star connected his willingness to endure physical punishment to his difficult childhood and particularly his relationship with his father, Frank Stallone Sr. Earlier in the interview, Stallone described his father as physically abusive and recalled growing up determined to prove that he couldn’t be broken.
That attitude followed him into adulthood and ultimately into his movies.
“But you do get broken a little bit,” Stallone said, “Physically, not mentally.”
There was one role that helped change Stallone’s relationship with his body: 1997’s Cop Land. For the crime drama, Stallone deliberately gained weight to play Freddy Heflin, a physically diminished sheriff who was far removed from the sculpted heroes audiences associated with him.
Stallone said playing “the weakest guy in the room” left him feeling “somewhat liberated.”
Now, after decades spent cultivating an image of almost superhuman toughness, Stallone is looking back at what it cost him.
“It’s come at a terrible price,” he said.
