The Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2027 is reportedly set to take place in the April-May window, and the tournament will collide with the IPL. According to Pakistani cricket journalist Sohail Imran, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and franchise owners are leaning towards the same window for the 12th edition.
The domestic T20 tournament moved away from its traditional February-March slot in recent seasons. While franchise owners prefer April-May because of school holidays, broadcasters have pushed for January-February to avoid competing with the IPL and protect advertising and viewership revenues.
Sohail Imran reported that the Pakistan Super League is expected to retain the April-May window used for the previous two seasons. However, the PCB, franchises and media rights holders have been discussing the final schedule, with broadcasters favouring an earlier start in January 2027.
"The 12th season of the Pakistan Super League will also take place in the same window in which the previous two seasons were held," Sohail Imran stated.
The April-May window has the backing of franchise owners and coincides with school holidays, but it would again place the league directly against the IPL. It would also require players to compete during the peak summer heat in Pakistan.
The January-February option would avoid the IPL clash and could help broadcasters recover advertising and television revenues. However, that window overlaps with Australia’s Big Bash League and South Africa’s SA20, creating another challenge for the availability of overseas players.
PSL-IPL Clash Creates Overseas Player Availability Problems
The Pakistan Super League was traditionally played between February and March from its inaugural season in 2016 through 2024. The PCB shifted the 2025 edition to April-May to make room for Pakistan’s hosting duties for the ICC Champions Trophy, creating the first direct clash with the IPL.
The league remained in the same window in 2026 because the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup occupied the early part of the calendar. Several international players have opted for IPL commitments, while IPL franchises have also recruited players from PSL squads as replacements during the season.
The PCB has responded with disciplinary action against players who left their PSL commitments. Corbin Bosch received a one-year PSL ban after leaving Peshawar Zalmi to join Mumbai Indians. Zimbabwe pacer Blessing Muzarabani was handed a two-year ban after leaving Islamabad United for Kolkata Knight Riders.
Sri Lankan all-rounder Dasun Shanaka also received a one-year suspension after leaving his PSL commitment to represent Rajasthan Royals.
PSL Faces Financial Pressure Despite Structural Changes
The April-May window has also created commercial challenges for the Pakistan Super League. Media rights holders have faced difficulties attracting advertising revenue while competing with the IPL, which commands a much larger share of the international T20 market.
A major rights partner reportedly defaulted on around PKR 4.5 billion in payments owed to the PCB. The financial pressure led the board to temporarily withhold around PKR 40-45 crore from the franchise central revenue pool, triggering a legal dispute between the PCB and team owners.
Despite the financial difficulties, the scheduling changes have also pushed the league towards structural reforms. The competition moved away from its traditional player draft and introduced an auction system, giving franchises greater flexibility in their recruitment strategy.
Teams were also allowed to sign one marquee player outside the normal salary limits. The league is also moving towards an eight-team structure with the planned addition of franchises representing Sialkot and Hyderabad.
