Chicago is her home. But for the past 12 years, a former flight attendant has been imprisoned in China.
Her family believes that President Trump’s meeting with Chinese leader Xi Jinping in Washington this week could lead to her release.
Dawn Hunt loved to travel. Her brother, Tim Hunt, said she was lured into a fraudulent sweepstakes scheme in 2014 with the promise of an all-expense paid trip to Australia.
Instead, she was arrested for possession of methamphetamines during a stopover in China to pick up prize items. Her brother says they were hidden in a purse she was gifted as part of the contest.
“She was scammed. They got a naive person,” said Tim Hunt. “She’s been paying for it ever since. She was detained for three years.”
Tim Hunt says his sister was given the death penalty with a two-year reprieve — now reduced to life in prison.
“I visited her two years ago, and I was shocked. Then, I visited here a couple months ago, and I was even more shocked. I was in the visiting room first. She walked in, and she was slumped over, and her hair was all gray. Her eyes were bulging. Her teeth are yellow. They shifted,” he said. “You know, and that’s just what I could see physically, and then there’s the whole mental thing. She was unable to stay focused.”
Their father, retired Chicago Police Sgt. Gene Hunt died in January.
“One of the hardest things for me is that I didn’t get her out before our dad passed away,” Tim Hunt said. “There are other families who are like my family. And I want them to know that I think about you, too. The mother and father of Nelson Wells Jr. and my family have become very close.”
Tim Hunt said his family and the family of Nelson Wells Jr. are “pushing President Trump to ask President Xi for the release of both.“
“All it’s going to take is for President Trump to mention Dawn and Nelson’s names.That’s it. The humanitarian request from my side has already been made. It was made in May of 2025.”
Dawn is now 55 years old.
“Pray for Dawn’s release, pray for her health, pray for Nelson’s release. Pray for his health. Pray for all the families of everyone who’s incarcerated. Just pray for them. Then call them senators, call a congressman,” Tim Hunt said.
