ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The Rochester Red Wings are heading to Las Vegas for the Triple-A National Championship after winning the International League playoff Thursday night.
Chief Investigative Reporter Berkeley Brean met a family outside ESL Ballpark who turned last night’s championship into a field of dreams moment. Scott Fybush and his son Eli were in the crowd at ESL for the game.
“It was amazing,” Fybush said.
“It was cold and there weren’t a lot of people here. However, the atmosphere was electric.”
“And just in those last innings it got wild,” Fybush said.
Last night’s win was a bookend story for Fybush. He watched the last Red Wings championship inside the ballpark in 1997 with his father.
“It’s a feeling of family continuity,” Fybush said.
“Even though my dad couldn’t be there last night, I was wearing his coat, we ended up in the same seats where we had been in ’97,” Fybush said.
Brean asked if Fybush was thinking about his dad during the game, referencing the line in Field of Dreams where Kevin Costner asks his dad if he can have a catch.
“Oh, I absolutely was,” Fybush said. “And he would have totally been here with us. He would have been complaining about the cold probably.”
Eli Fybush said baseball is about family, especially in Rochester.
“It’s an experience you’re not going to get in major league baseball,” Eli said.
The Red Wings take on the Oklahoma City Comets for the national championship. First pitch is Saturday night at 10:05 p.m. You can watch the game for free through the Bally Sports Live app.
