“I suppose there must be buried in me a morbidity that has prompted me to write 30 books about atrocious murders, but really it’s a cloud-cuckoo land, my world of crime,” he told the outlet.
J.I.M. Stewart, with the full name John Innes Mackintosh Stewart, was born on September 30 in Edinburgh, Scotland. He studied English literature at the University of Oxford, where he was awarded the Matthew Arnold Memorial Prize and named a Bishop Frazer’s scholar. As Stewart, he was known for critical studies on literature, writing about authors such as James Joyce, Joseph Conrad, and Thomas Love Peacock.
He taught at the University of Leeds and the University of Adelaide, South Australia, before making his way back to Oxford. He earned the title of professor at the prestigious university by the time he retired in 1973.
His final publication was his autobiography, Myself and Michael Innes, in 1987. Stewart died on November 12, 1994, at age 88.
