Imagine packing sweaters and jackets for a fall foliage cruise through New England and Canada, only to find out you’re actually heading to Florida and the Bahamas.
That’s exactly what happened to passengers booked on an upcoming Royal Caribbean sailing.
Royal Caribbean has completely overhauled the itinerary for Vision of the Seas’ nine-night cruise from Baltimore, swapping Boston, Maine and Canada for Florida and the Bahamas as adverse weather impacts the Northeast. The cruise line also delayed the ship’s departure by a day.
The sailing was originally scheduled to depart Baltimore on Thursday, Sept. 24, for a nine-night Canada and New England itinerary aboard Vision of the Seas. According to Royal Caribbean’s published itinerary, the ship was slated to visit Boston; Portland, Maine; Saint John, New Brunswick; and Halifax, Nova Scotia, before returning to Baltimore on Oct. 3.
Now, passengers are getting a very different vacation.
Instead of heading north, Vision of the Seas will sail south to Port Canaveral, Florida; Nassau, Bahamas; and Grand Bahama Island. The ship remained docked overnight in Baltimore and is expected to depart at 3 p.m. Friday, Sept. 25.

Why Did Royal Caribbean Change the Vision of the Seas Itinerary?
The cruise line cited developing weather systems along the ship’s original route.
“We’ve been closely monitoring the development of several weather systems along the path of our originally planned itinerary,” Royal Caribbean told passengers in a notification obtained by Cruise Hive.
The cruise line said unfavorable weather and high winds forced it to change course in order to provide a safe and comfortable experience. After considering its options, Royal Caribbean decided to replace the Canada and New England itinerary entirely with a Caribbean itinerary.
It’s a particularly dramatic change given just how different the two vacations are. Passengers expecting crisp fall temperatures, historic New England ports and Canadian scenery will instead be headed more than 1,400 miles southwest toward palm trees and beaches.

What Is the New Vision of the Seas Itinerary?
Vision of the Seas is now scheduled to call at Port Canaveral on Sept. 28, Nassau on Sept. 29 and Grand Bahama Island on Sept. 30, with sea days filling out the nine-night voyage. The ship is still expected to return to Baltimore at 7 a.m. on Oct. 3.
Guests who booked Royal Caribbean shore excursions for the canceled Canada and New England ports won’t have to worry about canceling them individually. According to the notice sent to passengers, prepaid excursions booked through the cruise line are being automatically canceled and refunded as onboard credit.
While having an entire itinerary switched at the last minute may be disappointing for travelers who specifically booked the cruise to experience New England and Canada in the fall, weather-related itinerary changes aren’t unusual in cruising. Royal Caribbean notes in its own itinerary information that ports of call can change because of weather, safety or operational considerations.
And in this case, passengers may want to unpack those sweaters and make room for a swimsuit.
