Paul Wesley Enoch, Sr., DVM
Paul Wesley Enoch, Sr., or “Doc” as he was affectionately known, was born on April 29, 1935 in Plunkett’s Creek, Tennessee to Howard Reece Enoch and Amanda Eunice Vantrease Enoch. He passed away peacefully on September 23, 2026 at the age of 91 leaving a lifetime legacy of deep faith and service both to his community and the animals he loved. Paul grew up on his family farm in a rural part of Smith County where he and his two brothers helped their parents raise cattle and crops. As a boy growing up on a modest farm, Paul developed a strong work ethic and an even stronger passion for the care of animals. He often noted that his love for animals would have likely led him to become a farmer had he not been encouraged to attend college by an agriculture teacher in high school.
Paul attended Smith County High School in Carthage, Tennessee and was strongly influenced by his family’s involvement with Plunkett’s Creek Missionary Baptist Church. He graduated from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville with a major in Animal Husbandry and was a proud member of the university’s Livestock Judging Team. He graduated in 1957 and was one of eight students from the state to be accepted into the Auburn University School of Veterinary Medicine. Paul earned his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) from Auburn in 1961 receiving the Borden Award for the student with the highest grades.
Paul and his family moved to Gallatin in 1961 where he opened Enoch Veterinary Clinic and practiced for an impressive 62 years. Known for his relentless work ethic and devotion to his clients, Paul saw an average of 30 patients a day, 6 days a week throughout his career. To Paul, veterinary medicine was never just a profession—it was a true ministry. For over six decades, he answered the call at all hours of the night, driving to farms throughout Sumner, Trousdale and Macon counties to deliver a calf, or staying late at the clinic to comfort a family saying goodbye to a beloved pet. He believed that caring for God’s creatures was a sacred duty and he treated every animal with gentleness and every pet owner with grace.
Beyond the clinic, Paul was an active member of the community, serving on the Gallatin City Council and the Sumner County Board of Health. He also supported Fellowship of Christian Athletes and the Boy Scouts. He served as the president of the Tennessee Veterinary Medical Association in 1983-84 and received the Distinguished Service Award from the organization in 1993. Paul and his wife, Janice, were supporters of Volunteer State Community College and funded an annual scholarship that impacted many lives. In recognition of his deep community footprint, the City of Gallatin officially declared August 19, 2021 as “Dr. Paul W. Enoch Day” to celebrate his 60 consecutive years of civic and veterinary service to the Sumner County area.
Paul had a deep love for the game of golf and enjoyed many fun rounds with Janice, his children and friends. He was fortunate enough to shoot several holes-in-one, each of which he proudly displayed on the walls of the clinic. He was an avid Tennessee Vols football fan and could amaze his grandchildren with his vast knowledge of recruiting stats. He also cheered for the Auburn Tigers when they played anyone other than Tennessee.
Paul was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers, Charles David Enoch and William Howard Enoch, and his grandchildren, Mary Katherine Enoch and Wilson Holt Enoch. He is survived by his wife, Janice Mitchell Enoch, his children Paul Wesley (“Buddy”) Enoch, Jr, Thomas Norris Enoch (Nancy), Elizabeth Beasley Enoch Moore (Rusty) and Mary Amanda Enoch Hilburn (Bob), stepchildren, Michael D. Mitchell (Cindy) and Sean G. Mitchell (Helen), sister-in-law, Patricia I. Garis (Don); brothers-in-law, Bob Finch and Jim Finch; grandchildren, Thomas Norris Enoch, Jr., Sarah Enoch Bolen (Austin), Wilson Roe Moore (Kennedy), Wesley McBride (“Mack”) Enoch, Ann Enoch Broughton (Dallas), Elizabeth Enoch (“Lilly”) Doan (Evan), William Alexander Hilburn, and Elizabeth Moore (“Ellie”) Drury (Grant); great grandchildren, Willow Elizabeth Enoch, Caroline Ann Moore, Emma Roe Moore, Allie McBride Bolen, Annie Love Elizabeth Bolen and James Shepherd Broughton; step-grandchildren Kristen T. Mitchell, Karah J. Mitchell and Penelope S. Mitchell, nieces and nephews as well as the generations of farmers, pet owners and community members whose lives were touched by his generous spirit.
Special thanks to Paul’s caregivers, his friends and visitors from the Connect Group Sunday School at First Baptist Church in Hendersonville and especially to the devoted staff and clients of Enoch Veterinary Clinic (now Sumner Springs Veterinary Clinic). In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Humane Society of Sumner County or The Backpack Ministry at First Baptist Church Hendersonville.
Visitation with the family will be held at Alexander Funeral Home & Cremation Center on Sunday, September 27, 2026 from 3:00 to 5:00 pm. A Celebration of Life will be held at the Chapel at First Baptist Church Hendersonville on Monday, September 28, 2026 at 11:00 am with visitation prior to the service at the church at 10:00 am.
