The Town of Chapel Hill announced Thursday it received a $10 million gift which will fund both a new building at Cedar Falls Park and two greenway extensions.
The funds were given to the town by the Bill & Peggy Britt Foundation Inc., which was started by Peggy Britt to support grant-making in the fields of education, philanthropy, voluntarism and health care. At its Sep. 23 meeting, the town council thanked the foundation and signed off on naming the facilities in honor of the Britts, who were longtime Chapel Hill residents and business owners.
“Bill and Peggy built a life here, and we are incredibly honored that their legacy will make a difference for Chapel Hill residents for many generations to come. These projects reflect our vision for a Complete Community — places where people can connect with one another, enjoy the outdoors, participate in recreation, and access the amenities that make Chapel Hill such a special place to call home,” said Mayor Jess Anderson in a release from the town. “The Britt Foundation’s extraordinary gift will help make that vision a reality and is a wonderful example of how philanthropy can create lasting benefits for an entire community.”
The town will split the donation, with $5.8 million going towards constructing “the Bill and Peggy Britt Building” at Cedar Falls Park, located at 501 Weaver Dairy Road in Chapel Hill. It will be an indoor pavilion for wellness activities, recreation programs and more. The town will use the remaining $4.2 million to extend the Campus Recreation Trail between the NC Botanical Garden and Barbee Chapel Road, and the Pritchard Branch Trail connecting W. Cameron Avenue to Morgan Creek. Markers honoring the Britts’ donation will be placed at these greenways.
“Parks and greenways are essential to the fabric of our community,” said Parks & Recreation Director Atuya Cornwell. “This generous gift will add a great new amenity to one of our busiest parks, close to where the Britts lived in Chapel Hill, and create two new greenways that will benefit and connect our community, both now and in the future.”
The Britts owned homes in Chapel Hill for more than forty years, operating one of the largest Amway businesses in the world. Amway is a multi-level marketing company which sells health, beauty and homecare products. Bill Britt died in 2013, and Peggy died in 2024.
