Following what would have been Tay Keith’s 30th birthday, the late producer’s family celebrated his legacy on Monday (Sept. 21) as the Memphis hitmaker was honored with the key to the city and his own official day in his hometown.
City officials such as Memphis’ Mayor Paul Young were among those to present Keith’s family with the key to the city and other legislative proclamations during the ceremony. The mayor also noted that going forward, Sept. 20, which was the producer’s birthday, will be Tay Keith Day.
“Today we keep our beloved Tay Keith’s memory and profound work alive by unveiling the Tay Keith Music Lab in partnership with Memphis Public Libraries. This space will connect his legacy to creation and focus on future generations of young DJ, producers and music moguls to come,” Keith’s family said in a statement. “Through an archival collection preserved as part of the historical record of Memphis and Shelby County along with 901Voices oral history initiative, all of these elements will serve as a living legacy where future creators can work, where history can be preserved and a permanent record where Tay’s story can continue to be heard.”
Keith’s family continued: “We feel he would be so proud of this community effort and being able to continue impacting the young creatives in Memphis, which was always a big part of who he was as a person in both his life and music.”
Kinnawa KaitibiTay Keith’s legacy will live on through the next generation. Keith’s family partnered with the Memphis Public Library to launch the Tay Keith Music Lab at the Benjamin L. Hooks Central Library, which will teach a beatmaking crash course to aspiring creatives, producers and musicians who will be armed with state-of-the-art resources.
“The funding of this music lab is an investment in the next generation of Memphis talent and a fitting tribute to Tay Keith. His legacy will live on by giving young people the tools and space to create, learn, and build their own future in Music,” said Mayor Young in a statement.
“We are honored to dedicate our Cloud901 music production lab to Tay Keith. What better way to honor the legacy of a beloved Memphian and his timeless work than with a space that gives teens the freedom to find their own voices,” added Dr. Eric D. Harris, who serves as the Memphis Public Libraries director.

Keith’s knocking drums and cinematic production took the next generation of Memphis to the world as a sonic architect of hip-hop in the late 2010s and into the first half of the 2020s.
The Drumatized boss notched a pair of Grammy nominations, 11 Billboard Hot 100 top 10 hits and four No. 1s, including Travis Scott’s “Sicko Mode” and Drake and J. Cole’s “First Person Shooter.” He had a diverse group of collaborators, which ranged from Beyoncé to Sexyy Red and Key Glock.
