Guttman’s company, Guttman Associates Public Relations, announced that he died in Los Altos, California. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Guttman and his wife of 70 years, Gisela, moved to be closer to family last year after the Palisades Fire tore through their community.
Before starting Guttman Associates Public Relations, Guttman worked for Rogers & Cowan while studying film and psychology at UCLA. At Rogers & Cowan, he represented stars like Paul Newman, Tony Curtis and others. After graduating, he worked as a publicist in Europe on films like Paris Holiday and The Key.
In the 1990s, Guttman launched his company, with clients including the likes of Gene Hackman and Janet Jackson. He represented films like Shakespeare in Love, The King’s Speech and The Artist.
Aside from actors and films, Guttman also represented astronaut Buzz Aldrin and author Sidney Sheldon. The Hollywood Reporter said that when asked how many clients he represented, he replied, “I’ve done the rough math, and my guess is probably 700 clients and about 200 legends. I have been very blessed.”
In 2015, Guttman released a 600-plus-page autobiography called Starflacker: Inside the Golden Age of Hollywood. Detailing stories from his career, he said that he always loved his profession “because it has dignity.”
“You have a task, and you accomplish it in a skilled way,” Guttman said. “To me that’s dignity.”
Guttman is survived by his wife, as well as his daughters Monika and Danielle, granddaughters Alyssa and Claire, great-granddaughter Aria and sister Joan. In lieu of flowers, the family is suggesting donations to the Dick Guttman Memorial Fund.
