FAIRPORT, N.Y. — It’s Oktoberfest season in Germany and the Rochester area. Fairport Oktoberfest kicks off on Thursday night and runs through Saturday night at 9 Liftbridge Lane East. Last Friday, the Rochester Public Market held its annual Oktoberfest.
So, why does Oktoberfest happen in September? News10NBC’s Emily Putnam spoke with Heidi Kozireski, vice president of the Federation of German American Societies, to answer a common question about the timing of the festival.
“That is the eternal question that never goes away,” Kozireski said. “The original Oktoberfest was to celebrate the wedding of Prince Ludwig I, who became King Ludwig I — not mad King Ludwig II — and his bride Princess Therese of Saxe. They were actually married in October, and they invited essentially the entire city to come and celebrate their nuptials.”
So why is it celebrated in September? Kozireski said it’s simply because the weather is better in the Bavaria in September.
