ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Thursday marks the state’s target date to close Waterview Heights, the rehabilitation and nursing center in Rochester that’s been the subject of multiple News10NBC investigations.
For over two years, News10NBC investigations have documented accusations of abuse at the facility. The facility is facing hundreds of thousands of dollars in state and federal fines because of its conditions. In addition, the state has labeled it as a special focus facility since 2023 because it “consistently demonstrated a failure to maintain compliance with a history of practices that resulted in harm to residents.” Here’s the latest on the nursing home in the Charlotte neighborhood.
Finding new homes for residents
News10NBC is working to learn whether the facility has found new homes for all of its residents. As of our last report on Friday, around 70 residents remained at Waterview Heights. When the state announced the closure, 160 residents were living there.
Some families said their loved ones could be moved to facilities an hour or more away because of the lack of nursing home beds locally. That’s the case for one 85-year-old wife of a resident to whom she’s been married for more than five decades. See that story here.
Rally planned for Sunday
Elder Justice Committee of local political advocacy organization Metro Justice is set to hold a rally on Sunday, Sept. 27, to call for greater federal and state oversight over nursing facilities.
The committee has long criticized the conditions at Waterview Heights and has called for more accountability. The rally is taking place at Washington Square Park from 2 to 3:30 p.m.
