A ‘strong smell’ of gas spread in part of a south suburb on Tuesday afternoon from a leak that prompted police to shut down traffic near an elementary school, authorities said.
Around 1 p.m., the Village of Tinley Park Public Safety said 171st Street was blocked from Elm Lane Drive through 6600 171st Street because of a gas leak in the area.
“Strong smell of gas but no harm to the public. Nicor is on scene,” officials said in a post on social media around 1 p.m.
The street closure impacted access to Fulton School, an elementary school located at 6601 West 171st Street, officials said. To access the school, traffic must enter from the east off Forestview Drive.
Officials estimated repairs would take between four to six hours around 1 p.m.
