Gaga rocked the look to protest the U.S. military’s “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy at the time, which prevented service members from openly being part of the LGBTQ+ community. The policy was enacted in 1994 and ended in 2011, a year after the award show.
“As you know, I am the most judgement-free human being on the earth,” Gaga said at the time. “If we don’t stand up for what we believe in and don’t stand up for our rights, pretty soon we’re going to have as much rights as the meat on our bones.”
The “Poker Face” singer was criticized by PETA at the time. “Wearing a dress made out of cuts of dead cows is offensive enough to bring comment, but someone should whisper in her ear that there are more people who are upset by butchery than who are impressed by it—and that means a lot of young people will not be buying her records if she keeps this stuff up,” the organization wrote in a statement in Sept. 2010.
In 2015, the outfit went on display at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio, until 2019, when it moved to the Haus of Gaga, the singer’s residency museum. The Las Vegas-based exhibit is located in the Park MGM Resort & Casino in Las Vegas.
