Orioles infielder Jackson Holliday landed on the injured list last week due to inflammation in his left wrist. Holliday now tells the Orioles beat that he’ll require surgery (via Jake Rill of MLB.com). The procedure will take place later this week or early next week. It’s expected to come with a 10-week recovery window.
Specifics on the forthcoming procedure aren’t yet clear, but the 22-year-old Holliday (23 in December) should be back up to full strength before the end of the year, assuming that 10-week rehab window proves accurate. The infielder said he’s not dealing with a complete tear in his wrist.
“Hopefully just go in there and clean it up and that’ll be that,” Holliday said, as relayed by Rill.
Despite his youth, this was already Holliday’s third season in the big leagues. He posted a .640 OPS across 354 plate appearances. The former top prospect now has an 86 wRC+ in 307 career games.
Holliday seemed to develop into a consistent power/speed threat last season. He hit 17 homers and stole 17 bases as Baltimore’s primary second baseman. Holliday couldn’t replicate the power production this year. His ISO slipped to .111, and his hard-hit rate tumbled to 33.1%. Holliday posted career lows in barrel rate and average exit velocity.
The decline at the plate could be attributed to hamate bone surgery in the spring. The injury is known to sap power, and Holliday’s recovery didn’t go smoothly. He dealt with soreness during his rehab stint and didn’t make his regular season debut until mid-May.
Holliday continued to struggle defensively at the keystone this year. He recorded -3 Defensive Runs Saved across 85 appearances. He’s now at -15 DRS in his career at the position. Baltimore gave him a brief look at third base for the first time as a pro. He wasn’t much better in a limited sample (-1 DRS in 11 innings). With Jordan Westburg likely factoring in next season, it’ll be interesting to see how the Orioles infield shakes around Pete Alonso and Gunnar Henderson.
In other Baltimore injury news, the club announced that catcher Samuel Basallo is headed to the 7-day concussion IL. The backstop was removed from Monday’s game against the Blue Jays after taking a foul ball to the mask. It’s Basallo’s second IL stint of the second half after he missed about a month with right shoulder inflammation. Heston Kjerstad was recalled to take Basallo’s spot on the roster. Carlos Narvaez and Yohel Pozo will handle the catching duties for the final week of the season.
The Orioles also shared that outfielder Tyler O’Neill had a PRP injection in his shoulder (h/t again to Rill). The club anticipates he’ll be ready for Spring Training next year. O’Neill hit the 10-day injured list in late August with right shoulder inflammation. He was shifted to the 60-day IL last week. Neck, shoulder, and wrist injuries, along with a concussion, have limited O’Neill to 139 games in his first two seasons in Baltimore. He’s entering the final season of a three-year, $49.5MM deal.
