“It was serendipity, because I went to that salon to have my hair styled, and Leonard, the hairdresser, saw me and said, ‘Can I cut your hair?’ ” she recalls.
“The funny thing was, I didn’t want my hair cut, because I was a mod, and I liked it long and parted in the middle. Because I was so timid and in this posh Mayfair salon, I was too shy to say no to him!”
That hairut changed everything and had photographer Barry Luttigam place her in front of the camera and he said “Look in the lens.” The photo became the most famous shot of her career and it was actually a photo that was hung at the salon as an example for clients. Soon, a fashion journalist asked about the photo and wanted Twiggy to model.
Twiggy’s career soon started when then-Vogue editor-in-chief Diana Vreeland contcted her and got her modeling for photographer Richard Avedon. The teen got the stamp of approval, and admits it all worked out because she “didn’t look like anybody else.”
“It was never about me to start, it was about the haircut. It was all very exciting, but it was weird. I was thrown into this madness!” she explained.
One month after being discovered, Twiggy graced the cover of Vogue magazine at only 5 ft 6 in, and became one of the leading models of the industry.
