The approach has been used to procure the demolition of a former nursery site in Nuremberg’s Westpark area.
Volvo Construction Equipment says the project shows that the technique is scalable and easy for other municipalities to replicate.
Site operations were conducted by Metzner Recycling and Robert Aebi Nuremberg using a Volvo electric compact excavator, compact wheel loader and hook-lift truck.
Nuremberg’s Public Space Service Agency had previously visited the world’s first fully electric deconstruction project, which Volvo undertook last year at Siemens’ headquarters in Erlangen.
Electric equipment also reduces noise on site and increases circular material use, with separated material able to be recovered more easily, Volvo says.

What’s your advice for public and private organisations contemplating this approach?
Be bold enough to take the first step and try it. In practice, electric construction and deconstruction projects work much better and are often much easier to implement than many people initially expect.
The key is close cooperation from the beginning, with clearly defined responsibilities and early planning of the equipment, energy supply and charging concept.
Will other German cities pursue public tenders for zero-emission projects?
Yes. The more successful reference projects we create, the more cities will consider zero-emission requirements in future tenders. Public expectations will also become an increasingly important driver.

This is particularly relevant when discussing low-emission zones, quality of life and rising temperatures in large urban areas.
Transport is a good example. If 20,000 tonnes of material must be removed from a city-centre deconstruction site, this represents approximately 800 truckloads at 25 tonnes per vehicle.
Now imagine those trucks waiting in urban traffic at 37°C. Using electric trucks can significantly reduce local exhaust emissions, noise and additional heat in an already overheated city centre.
Can electric machinery be used on other projects besides demolition contracts?
Yes. Across Europe, electric equipment is already being used or tested in building construction, heavy infrastructure, utilities and industrial material handling. Examples include urban construction sites in Stockholm, London and Oslo, a sawmill in Sweden and a tunnel project in Germany.
For Volvo CE, electric equipment is becoming a normal part of our daily business and standard offering. The performance of electric machines is equal to, and in some applications better than, that of comparable diesel machines.
The operating principles remain largely the same, while customers benefit from lower noise levels, zero local exhaust emissions, and reduced dependence on fuel deliveries. Where a suitable electricity supply is available and projects are planned accordingly, electric equipment can be used across a wide range of applications.
Are zero-emission contracts viable for larger developments?
Yes. Large-scale electric construction projects are already being delivered across Europe and Asia, and fully electric deconstruction projects have also been completed successfully. The concept has therefore moved beyond theory.
Energy supply is often seen as the main challenge, but it can usually be addressed through early planning. On inner-city and industrial deconstruction sites, an electrical connection is often already available because the building was previously supplied with power. The important point is to retain and plan for that connection during the deconstruction phase. The necessary hardware, charging systems and energy-management solutions are available.
Equipment portfolios are also expanding steadily, with new Volvo machines being developed in line with market demand. The main barrier is therefore not the technology itself. It is making the initial decision to specify an electric project and incorporating the necessary requirements into the tender from the outset.
How easy is it to find suitable electric equipment on projects like these?
For projects such as those in Nuremberg and Erlangen, suitable electric equipment is already available. The portfolios are not yet complete, and there is not an electric equivalent for every diesel-powered machine. However, many of these gaps can be addressed through small adjustments to the working process or equipment planning.
The range is also expanding year by year. Volvo CE’s current portfolio already includes electric haulers and wheeled excavators, while additional crawler excavators are undergoing customer trials. These developments will extend the portfolio across both smaller and larger machine classes. Volvo Trucks is also introducing a new generation of electric vehicles with increased range, while Volvo CE continues to improve machine performance and charging solutions. The market is developing rapidly.
