ROCHESTER, N.Y. — An officer with the Rochester Police Department has been named the 2026 Police Officer of the Year.
Officer Nicole Amatore, who has been with RPD since 2019, was given the award by Gov. Kathy Hochul during the State Division of Criminal Justice Services annual Public Safety Symposium.
“It takes tremendous courage and integrity for police officers to suit up each day and put themselves in harm’s way to protect others,” said Hochul in a press release. “It takes even more to remain calm and act quickly and decisively in the face of a deadly threat. Officer Amatore did just that while under fire from a gunman who had already wounded three of her colleagues.”
On Dec. 19, 2025, Amatore stopped a suspect who shot and wounded three other RPD officers while responding to a domestic incident on Chili Avenue near Thurston Road in Rochester.
When Amatore first got to the scene, the suspect shot at her. She took cover behind a tree and returned fire, shooting the suspect, who died at the scene.

“Officer Amatore’s heroic actions powerfully demonstrated courage, quick thinking, and selflessness in the face of imminent danger,” Rochester Mayor Malik Evans said in a press release. “That unbridled bravery is characteristic of this extraordinary public servant, who exemplifies the highest principles of a sworn officer committed to serving and protecting others before themselves. We are proud to recognize and commend her outstanding service.”
Amatore is the second member of RPD to be named the state’s police officer of the year. The first to get the award was retired RPD Officer Denny Wright in 2023.
