Football Manager enters its Were so back era following first FM27 deep dive

If 'it's so over' was the prevailing response to FM26 last year, then we have never been more back than we are now, following the first FM27 deep dive.

FM26 faced many issues following Sports Interactive's rocky two-year switch to the Unity engine, but none were as harshly criticised as the game's UI.

Shifting from the traditional UI, FM26 introduced a more tile-centric interface, reminiscent of the days of Windows 8 – remember how much we all loved Windows 8?

It was clunky, unintuitive, and it just didn't look very nice, prompting plenty of player speculation that the game had been secretly made to cater to potential console players over PC fans.

The game has improved over the months, and with a custom skin, it's in the best state it's ever been in, but thankfully, SI has been listening to feedback and produced their first deep dive into FM27, showcasing the changes to the UI.

    And boy, is it beautiful.

Immediately, it's obviously a return to what players are used to, and looks at first glance just like the FM24 UI did, which is an immediate relief.

Beyond just aesthetics, that means the return of more intuitive menu options, windows that open fully instead of into just a section of the screen, and perhaps most important of all, data.

It looks like we finally have our data back, and after a year of having to dig through endless menus to find information on player stats and performances, they're now there on show for all to see.

And SI has done us one better, because they haven't stopped with just a return to the old UI style, instead choosing to improve on it.

There's more customisation than ever before, giving players the option to choose what menus and information they want to see, and where they want to see it.

The layout now automatically optimises for your screen size and resolution, meaning whether you're on a crappy old laptop or playing on a widescreen monitor, the game will now alter to look its best for your situation.

Messages in your inbox are now colour-coded to give you a clear indication of what they relate to, and immediately making obvious what the most important issues you need to deal with are.

It's the first step towards regaining players' trust after a disastrous first year, and there are more deep dives to come over the next couple of months before release.

But I can't lie, this is the most excited we've been about Football Manager for a long, long time.
