IRONDEQUOIT, N.Y. — Deliberations are set to resume on Tuesday in the trial of two brothers accused of murdering an Irondequoit family of four.
Deliberations began on Monday after closing arguments wrapped up. Brothers Luis Soriano and Julio Pimentel Soriano are accused of killing the family in August 2024 in the basement of their home on Knapp Avenue, then setting the home on fire. The judge has ordered deliberations to resume at 10 a.m. after a late night in court. The brothers are on trial together, but each has a separate jury.
The prosecution is arguing that the brothers devised and went through with a plan to kill the family over a missing package of drugs delivered from Puerto Rico to Rochester. The defense is arguing that investigators didn’t collect enough evidence to tie the brothers to the killings, and they were just minor drug traffickers compared to more powerful and ruthless leaders in the organization who could have carried out the killings.
The trial is now in its fifth week. The brothers are accused of killing two children — Evangeline Ubaldo-Moreno, 4, and Sebastian Ubaldo-Moreno, 2 — along with the children’s father, Fraime Ubaldo, 30, and mother, Marangely Moreno-Santiago, 26.
According to prosecutors, Luis Soriano believed that Fraime, his cousin, stole the package of drugs. The defense presented the theory that Marangely and a man she was cheating on Fraime with worked together to steal the cocaine and planned to flee together.
The deliberation session wrapped up around 9 p.m. on Monday, with jurors instructed not to speak with anyone about the case until returning. The brothers face multiple charges, including first-degree murder, arson, kidnapping, and burglary. Wayne County District Attorney Christine Callanan is the special prosecutor in the case.
Investigators arrested Julio Soriano a week after the killings. His brother was arrested in June of 2025 after a months-long search for him. U.S. Marshals say Luis Soriano fled to Puerto Rico after the killings, then traveled to the Dominican Republic, where he was arrested.
