A third beluga rescued from the shuttered Marineland of Canada and transferred to Shedd Aquarium died on Monday, marking the aquarium’s fourth beluga death since the rescue effort started, a spokesperson confirmed.
Osiris, a 26-year-old rescued female beluga who arrived at Shedd in late July, passed away, the aquarium announced in a social media post.
“In recent updates, we shared that Osiris was facing health challenges and that her care team was responding as her needs changed. We hoped for a different outcome,” the aquarium said in the post, in part. “There is more we need to understand, and that work now carries even greater urgency. A full necropsy will be conducted for Osiris, alongside the analyses still underway from previous losses. We will continue sharing what we learn about the health of these rescued whales, both at Shedd and across the institutions now caring for them. “
The aquarium said its teams were grieving Osiris’ loss while continuing to provide individualized, around-the-clock care for each of its belugas.
Earler, on Sept. 2, two belugas died on a single day.
Rain, a 20-year-old female beluga that was brought to Shedd as a part of the rescue effort, and Beethoven, a 34-year-old male beluga from Shedd’s resident pod, both passed away “despite immediate efforts by animal care and veterinary teams to provide lifesaving measures,” a spokesperson for the aquarium said.
One week earlier, Shedd shared a heartbreaking update that Peekachu, a 23-year-old female beluga that was part of the rescue effort, died suddenly.
“These losses are hard, made more difficult by the fact that it will take time to get concrete answers about what led to their passings,” Shedd said in a statement at the time. “Some answers may come quickly, while others may take more time to come into focus. Given how closely the public has followed the rescue effort, Shedd felt it was important to share this news now rather than wait for every answer.”
Peekachu and Rain were two of 10 beluga whales brought to Shedd after Ottawa authorities approved a plan to relocate several whales from the closed Canadian park to multiple facilities in the United States and one to Spain, rather than potentially euthanize the 30 belugas that were left behind when the park closed last year.
The beluga that was transferred to Spain died earlier this week.
Four of the whales were transported to Shedd in late July, then four more in early August, and a final two on Sept. 1.
