A young Rams fan got the surprise of a lifetime when Matthew and Kelly Stafford sent her a special gift box, but it was her teacher’s message to the rest of the class that is now getting attention online.
As part of NFelementary – a football-based classroom curriculum created by third-grade teacher Mary Crippen – the Staffords surprised a student named Aria with a box filled with Los Angeles Rams goodies. Inside was a personal note from the Stafford family, and a backpack full of Rams gear, including a signed jersey, water bottle, purse, and ear muffs.
Aria was clearly thrilled as she pulled each item from the box, but as some of her classmates watched Crippen noticed some of the children were struggling with jealousy.
Crippen didn’t scold them for feeling that way. Instead, she used the moment to teach them something about celebrating someone else’s happiness.
“I hear, and that’s a normal thing,” she told the group. “You guys are 8 and 9 years old. It’s normal to see someone getting gifts and be like, ‘I want that.'”
Then she reminded them that Aria’s special moment didn’t take anything away from them.
“Right now, it’s Aria’s moment, and it doesn’t take away how special any of you are,” Crippen said. “It’s just right now her light is shining a little brighter.”
Her message continued, encouraging the children to celebrate one another without comparing their own lives to someone else’s.
“We can celebrate each other without it taking away from us,” she said.
Crippen also offered a reminder that feels just as relevant for adults as it does for children: “Sometimes it’s just not about us, and we have to remember that life is not about us all the time.”
The video, which has racked up more than 1.5 million views at time of publication, struck a chord with viewers with more than 2,200 fans flooding the comments – including Kelly Stafford.
“To have a teacher like you, that takes the time to teach important life lessons like that in class.. those kids are truly blessed,” Stafford wrote alongside a heart emoji.
“That part! It’s not always about us! We can be happy for others too,” one user added.
Another wrote, “You are making such a positive impact on these kids. This conversation will play in their heads for their whole life. These gifts will be forgotten, but the lesson you are teaching won’t.
