Check your freezer! A popular frozen pasta has been recalled, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
Gias Foods of New York is recalling bettergoods Authentic Italian Lemon Alfredo Fettuccine due to risk of contamination with Listeria monocytogenes.
In the US, Listeria is the fourth leading cause of death from foodborne illness, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
The bacteria is “organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems,” according to the FDA. “Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria monocytogenes infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.”
The Authentic Italian Lemon Alfredo Fettuccine was available at Walmart Inc. stores for purchase. Two lots of the product were recalled. The frozen pasta was packaged in a 22 oz yellow plastic bag, with UPC #194346442706, marked with lot #L6079C or #L6080C. It included an expiration date of 09/19/2027 or 09/20/2027, which appeared on the back of the bag.
The recall was discovered during a routine sampling program carried out by the Washington State Department of Agriculture and the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. The results found that frozen pasta may contain Listeria monocytogenes. The company ended distribution of the product while they work with the FDA to investigate the cause of the problem.
Those who purchased a potentially contaminated frozen pasta are urged to bring it back to the place of purchase for a full refund.
No customers have reported illness to the FDA as of now.
