ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — Some flights to and from the Frederick Douglass Greater Rochester International Airport have been canceled after a major circuit blew at the Philadelphia facility that controls air traffic to Newark Liberty International and other airports.
According to the airport’s website, two United Airlines flights to Newark have been canceled, and an American Airlines flight to Philadelphia has been canceled.
The airport’s website also says a United flight arriving from Newark has been canceled, and an American flight from Philadelphia has also been canceled.
Federal Aviation Administrator Bryan Bedford told NBC News that a major circuit blew at the facility, and when they tried to get the backup system up and running, they discovered the backup line had been cut at a New Jersey construction site.
In a post on X Monday afternoon, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said “An Amtrak construction crew accidentally cut into a fiber line in New Jersey which caused a telecom outage and forced FAA to pause flights in the Northeast.”
NBC News said an Amtrak spokesperson told them it was a New Jersey Transit contractor who accidentally cut the cable.
NJT later said in a statement to NBC that a construction crew working between New Brunswick and North Brunswick “accidentally severed a fiber-optic cable” at 9:45 a.m. but indicated that they are working to determine if a Verizon crew might be at fault.
As of 5 p.m. Monday, nearly 600 flights were canceled at Newark airport, and 189 flights were canceled at the Philadelphia airport, according to flightaware.com.
