Around 200 people were evacuated Sunday from a north-central Illinois campground as floodwaters surrounded the site, emergency management officials said.
The Lee County Emergency Management Agency said O’Connell’s RV Resort/Campground was being fully evacuated due to rising water at around 9 a.m. Evacuees were taken to a nearby grocery store, while a reunification site was set up at Amboy Central School. Amboy is approximately 60 miles southwest of Rockford.
The National Weather Service issued a flood warning for portions of Lee County after excessive rainfall led to heavy flooding on the Green River and nearby tributaries.
At around 7 p.m., emergency management officials reported flooding was ongoing, with multiple structures near the campground surrounded by floodwaters.
Multiple roads were also flooded.
The flood warning remains in effect through 11 a.m. Monday.
The water levels have receded some, but conditions remain unsafe for vehicles to enter or leave the campground.
Campground officials are expected to provide further updates on a reopening timeline.
