This week in local government, the Chapel Hill-Carrboro school board gets the spotlight – as board members will decide whom to appoint to replace former board member Rani Dasi, who’s now an Orange County Commissioner. They’ve got a lot of candidates to choose from: a whopping 53 residents submitted applications for the one board seat.
Also this week, the Chapel Hill Town Council will consider imposing a library card fee for Orange County residents living outside Chapel Hill – following the county’s decision to shift funding away from the Chapel Hill Public Library earlier this year.
Here’s a rundown of local government meetings this week in Durham, Orange, and Chatham Counties.
Orange County
The Chapel Hill Town Council meets at 6 p.m. Wednesday, September 23. Council members will get another update on the process of rewriting the town’s Land Use Management Ordinance (LUMO) – and there’s one other big item on this week’s agenda too: a possible vote to impose a $65 annual library card fee for Orange County residents living outside Chapel Hill. (That’s a response to Orange County’s decision in the spring to shift county-level funding from the Chapel Hill Public Library to the new Carrboro branch of the Orange County Public Library; Chapel Hill would impose the new fee to make up some of the funding difference.) And the Chapel Hill-Carrboro school board meets twice this week, first at 7 p.m. Wednesday, September 23 and then again at 7 p.m. Thursday, September 24. These are specially called meetings to consider the applications – 53 in all – from residents who want to be appointed to fill Rani Dasi’s seat on the board, after she stepped down to take a position on the Orange County Board of Commissioners. The board will review the 53 applications in open session on Wednesday, then on Thursday they’ll interview some of the candidates and appoint one to fill the seat.

Chatham and Durham Counties
Chatham County Commissioners meet Monday, September 21, in the Pittsboro courthouse, beginning with a 1 p.m. work session and continuing with their regular public meeting at 6 p.m. This week’s agenda includes presentations on space needs, early childhood education, agricultural preservation, and the use of funds from the national opioid settlement; the board will also consider a proposal for a 238-lot subdivision east of Bynum and vote on a resolution opposing the proposed Enbridge Gasline in Chatham County.
