No. 10 Alabama soccer hosted the Arkansas Razorbacks in its SEC home opener Friday night. The Crimson Tide won 2-0, marking goalkeeper Madi Munguia’s sixth clean slate of the season.
“This is a gritty group that finds ways to win,” head coach Wes Hart said. “I thought we had a good balance of being tough, being physical and scrappy, but also found time to turn it into soccer.”
In the seventh minute forward Larkin Thomason scored a goal to get the game going. However, after review, the goal was offside and called back.
This call by the referee left the stands yelling and wanting more from the Crimson Tide.
Thomason put the ball into the back of the net in the 34th minute after much back and forth between both teams.
For the remainder of the half, the ball kept going end to end between the two teams, with each taking shots at goal.
Alabama led 1-0 at the end of the first half, but the Razorbacks were leading in shots taken with nine to the Crimson Tide’s eight.
Munguia had three saves while Arkansas’ goalkeeper Keegan Smith had two.
“It’s kind of my job to organize the back of the line,” Munguia said. “We started in the summer really hard and our goal is just to keep doing the same.”
As the second half started, both teams kept the pressure high. In the 53rd minute, Arkansas forward Natalie Wagner received a yellow card for tripping an Alabama player.
The pressure from both sides continued with one more Arkansas shot and three more Alabama shots. Then inthe 64th minute, Arkansas forward Zoe Susi received a yellow card for shoving forward Kiley Kukan.
“They’re [Arkansas] always a tough team in the conference,” Thomason said. “We knew they were going to be a good team.”
In the 74th minute Alabama took a fateful corner kick when forward Reece Ward put the ball in the back of the net off her left boot. This brought the Crimson Tide’s lead to 2-0.
Alabama finished the second half with seven shots to Arkansas’ eight.
The Crimson Tide will be back in action on Sept. 24 at Texas A&M. The game is set to start at 7 p.m. CT.
