Beloved Hit, Ranked Among ‘Greatest Country Songs’ of All Time, Debuted Live at the White House

Brad Paisley’s 2009 song “Welcome to the Future” not only grew into a celebrated country classic but also earned its place among the “Greatest Country Songs of All Time.”

Landing at No. 200 on Rolling Stone’s list, the publication praised how one of “mainstream country’s most prominent liberals” managed to fill his nearly six-minute song with observations about different generations.

“Welcome to the Future” was also a commercial success, peaking at No. 2 on the U.S. Billboard Hot Country Songs chart.

Written by Paisley and Chris DuBois, the song was inspired by Barack Obama’s historic presidential victory in November 2008.

As fate would have it, Paisley was invited to participate in the White House Music Series shortly after the song made its official debut.

Paisley performed “Welcome to the Future” in the historic East Room of the White House in front of the then-president, first lady Michelle Obama, students, White House staff and members of Congress.

The country star also admitted that he had to close his eyes during his performance to keep himself from becoming emotional.

“I had to close my eyes, or I would completely break down,” Paisley revealed, as mentioned on his official website. “Cause in sound check at three in the afternoon, I started crying. I couldn’t sing it. The last words that I sang were, ‘Glory, glory hallelujah, welcome to the future,’ and then I left and went offstage. I took my hat and tipped it to him and said, ‘Thank you, sir.’ And then I came off and just started bawling, because it was so emotional for me to sing those words.”

As for the meaning of the song, Paisley also explained how “Welcome to the Future” represents his “hopes and dreams” through the experiences and perspectives of three generations, from his grandfather to himself and ultimately to his children.

Lastly, the country singer also highlighted the song’s impact on his eighth studio album, American Saturday Night.

“When I was making this record, [this song] was one of the last [songs] written,” he shared, as cited by The Boot. “It became the glue of what made this an album to me. It didn’t feel like a fully formed album until we wrote this. Then I thought, “Okay, this album is done.”
