After a 2:30 p.m. game turned into a 4:15 p.m. kickoff due to multiple lightning delays, No. 10 Alabama struggled to pull it together in a late 50-36 win against unranked Florida State.
Despite the delays, Bryant-Denny remained filled with fans throughout the game.
“I seen the last couple of minutes in the game where the fans really had got us in the momentum and the stride,” quarterback Keelon Russell said. “Even early on in the game, the fans really just showed us what Bama is all about.”
Just a year after FSU pulled off a 31-17 upset against the Crimson Tide in Week 1, the pair met again, this time in Bryant-Denny Stadium. Despite the different venue, weather complications still plagued the teams. Last season, warmups were interrupted due to weather delays as well.
The Seminoles came out of the gate ready to play, scoring on the first drive of the game off a 20-yard reception. Alabama kicker Conor Talty held it down for the Crimson Tide with two field goals early in the first half. However, Alabama’s defense seemed to crumble against the Seminoles.
The Seminoles racked up 21 points before Alabama answered back with a touchdown of its own. Eventually, Alabama showed some vigor toward the end of the second quarter, earning its first touchdown by freshman Cederian Morgan.
Not only was this Alabama’s first touchdown, but it was also Morgan’s first career touchdown wearing Crimson.
After Morgan got the ball rolling offensively, Alabama brought in back-to-back touchdowns to end the first half, bringing the score to 26-21.
Russell pulled away with his best start of the season so far leading drive after drive, making up for Alabama’s defensive errors. Russell finished 23-of-30 for 320 yards with four total touchdowns.
“Got on the football field, played some good team football in that little stretch and that’s what we got to remember,” head coach Kalen DeBoer said. “We got to remember those moments. We can make it happen.”
Alabama has already been praised this season for its improved defensive abilities but was unable to conjure up skills against the Seminoles. Alabama walked away from the game with just three sacks, more reminiscent of last year’s defense.
The Crimson Tide narrowly avoided last year’s fate as well when the Seminoles chiseled the gap down to 43-36 halfway through the fourth quarter. Alabama ended the game with a 50-36 lead after a touchdown from freshman running back Trae’Shawn Brown.
“We played as one today, coming out here dominating in the pass game and in the run game,” Russell said. “That’s hard to do as an offense, especially versus a team like FSU.”
Alabama will return to Saban Field at Bryant-Denny Stadium next Saturday against the University of South Carolina. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
