Angelina Jolie and Salma Hayek Pinault found an unexpected friendship.
The duo formed a meaningful connection while working on the film Without Blood. It follows Hayek and Demián Bichir as their characters reconnect during a war. Jolie directed the film, which was adapted from Alessandro Baricco‘s 2002 novella of the same name.
The 60-year-old star told People her conversation with Jolie was “were delicious” and “very organic.” She opened up about getting to know the 51-year-old director, sharing, “I love her mind and I get her. So I think when you know somebody gets you, you feel safe and you can be whoever you are in whatever circumstances.”
“Even though I’m much older than her, by the way,” Hayek joked.
“Not that much older!” Jolie remarked with a laugh. Adding, “To appreciate that friendship and that bond and that understanding — I haven’t had that kind of a connection in my life.”
Hayek shared the sentiment, “It’s hard to find that connection. And I think that’s what part of the movie is also about, how difficult it is to communicate, to connect.”
Without Blood brings Hayek’s Nina and Bichir’s Tito back together after a brutal action during an unnamed war. The film’s heavy subject matter prompted many deep conversations between Jolie and Hayek.
“Sometimes we would start passionately screaming at each other,” Hayek remembered. “Then I start crying and she hugs me, then we’re laughing nonstop. And from the outside, I could see people say, ‘What’s going on?’”
The Desperado star shared, “I can say whatever. She’s never offended because it’s coming from me. And we’re talking about issues, and then we start crying because we’re moved, not because we made each other cry… And then we say something stupid and we start cracking up.”
Without Blood is currently in theaters as of Sept. 18.
