Ogden residents push for safety changes at South Union Street and Stony Point Road intersection after 88-year-old woman killed in crash

OGDEN, N.Y. — A family is pushing for safety changes at a dangerous intersection in Ogden after an 88-year-old woman was killed in a crash nearly two weeks ago.

The crash sent four others, including two children, to the hospital. News10NBC’s Tom Kowalski spoke with the family living near the intersection of South Union Street and Stony Point Road who’s working to change it.

Chelsea Diesel has lived at the corner for almost her entire life. She said she has seen countless crashes there.

“In the last year, I would say at least ten,” Diesel said.

Diesel built her house last year along Union Street. Her parents, cousin and uncle all live next to her near the intersection, meaning their children play in view of any crashes that happen.

“And then this past weekend was the first one [in a while] that we’ve had since we’ve been out here that someone’s passed away,” Diesel said.

Christina Perry, Diesel’s cousin-in-law, said the children are often outside when crashes happen.

“Unfortunately, when these accidents happen, so we never know what they’re going to see, what they’re going to hear,” Perry said.

Diesel recalled a crash last year when her cousin pulled a baby out of a car seat.

“It was so terrifying. The baby’s crying. I just don’t know if the baby’s okay. What’s going on? And, you know, like, you said, when there’s kids involved, it really pulls at my heartstrings,” Diesel said.

Diesel created a Change.org petition calling on the state Department of Transportation to install traffic safety improvements at the intersection. The petition has more than 700 signatures.

“I want to see a flashing stop sign, flashing yellow and red lights. Just something to bring awareness to it. Because clearly, just a stop sign alone, and the sign right here that they just put up this year isn’t enough,” Diesel said.

A DOT spokesperson told Kowalski that reflective signposts and route markers were recently installed near the intersection. The DOT says it’s always looking to discuss enhancements with local partners, the spokesperson said.

“I know people have tried to do stuff in the past, and I’m hoping that this time we can actually make some leeway,” Diesel said.

Monroe County offers an online Citizen Concern Form for residents who notice dangerous intersections. Residents can type in the road names and describe the issue, and even attach photos or videos.
