First Alert Weather: A cool Friday night and Saturday morning is ahead

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Friday brought cooler and comfortable weather across Western New York with most of us seeing high temperatures between 68 and 73 degrees! Low dew points are providing relief from the humidity that has lingered through the past couple of days. The area of high pressure over the upper Great Lakes will persist and stretch into the Northeast supporting dry weather and cool temperatures through Friday night. We are tracking partly cloudy skies and temperatures in the mid-60s to start out Friday night high school football games around the greater Rochester region. Overnight, temperatures will continue to drop into the low 50s across the Rochester metro and the mid-upper 40s for those further south towards the Southern Tier and Finger Lakes. Winds are expected to stay light through the evening and overnight hours.

Saturday morning will start out crisp with temperatures slowly climbing through the 50s during the morning hours. It will definitely be “sweater weather” through Saturday with high temperatures only in the mid-upper 60s. The forecasted high for Rochester on Saturday is 68 with winds out of the northeast between 10 and 15 mph.

We are tracking a low pressure system, currently entering the Midwest states, that will approach the lower Great Lakes Saturday night and is expected to progress across western New York through Sunday morning. The exact track of this storm has been a little tricky to pinpoint. Some new data from the most recent European model run focuses on heavy rain throughout all of WNY. The most recent run of the HRRR (high resolution model) shows this change as well. However, data that comes out around 8pm will likely paint a better picture as to the track of this system. Runs that come out twice a day at 8am and 8pm take advantage of weather observations (balloon launches) that only happen twice a day. These runs tend to be more realistic due to the ingestion of this valuable observational data.

Long story short – rain is to be expected, especially starting early Sunday morning and stretching through the earlier afternoon hours. It is more likely that locations south of Rochester could see a heavier soaking. If you are planning on participating in the Rochester Half Marathon on Sunday morning, it would be wise to make sure your rain gear is ready!

    Have a great weekend!
