ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The Touchdown 10 game of the week is between two of the best football team’s in the City of Rochester. The reigning state champions, Monroe High School, will take on the defending Section V champions, East High School.
Monroe has won 14 straight games, with their closest contest coming against East last year. The Red Jackets enter Friday’s game with a 2-0 record.
“We know a lot of these guys, these guys, they train at the same place we do. So you know, we know these guys personally. So like our brothers and brothers fight, going to be a dogfight,” said Monroe tackle Alijah Jones.
Monroe quarterback Pooty Cunningham is one passing touchdown away from breaking the Section V record. He’s currently tied with 76 career passing touchdowns.
“This is something I’ve worked toward my whole life. I just want to come out there and show what we can do as a team,” Cunningham said.
Terrell Cunningham Sr. said it felt right to save the milestone for the East game.
East High School also enters the game undefeated at 2-0. Both teams are in Class B, meaning they could meet again in the playoffs.
“We played at the highest level, highest competition, obviously, the state championship in the dome. So measuring stick for us would just be going back to that place and win this game,” said Monroe running back Terrence Barner.
Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. at East High. News10NBC will have highlights from this game, and others across Section V, Friday night at 11 p.m.
