Trains were delayed and people asked to avoid part of a northwest suburb after a Metra train struck a car on Friday.

Around noon, outbound Union Pacific Northwest train no. 652 struck a vehicle near the intersection of Hart Road and Route 14 in Barrington, officials said.

    Aerial video from NBC Chicago Sky 5 showed a badly damaged red vehicle in a wooded area off the side of the road with investigators working nearby.

    “If possible, please consider using alternate routes and avoiding the area. We will provide updates as they become available,” Barrington authorities said.

    Metra warned riders to expect “extensive delays.”

    According to the Metra alerts as of 12:50 p.m., UPNW train no. 652, scheduled to arrive in Chicago at 3:10 p.m., will depart late. UPNW train no. 648, scheduled to arrive at Ogilvie Transportation Center at 1:10 PM, was stopped near Cary, and UPNW train no. 623, scheduled to arrive at Harvard at 12:25 p.m., was stopped near Barrington because of the incident.

    Authorities were not immediately able to provide information regarding injuries.
