ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Flu season will be here before you know it. For older adults, there’s a new vaccine option this year to protect from the flu.
A viewer named Kristin wrote to News10NBC asking: “I’d like to know which places I can find the newer vaccines, especially the new mRNA flu vaccine.”

The new flu vaccine from Moderna — called mFLUSIVA — was approved by the FDA over the summer for adults 50 and older. News10NBC’s Emily Putnam checked with UR Medicine, and the health system said it will not be stocking the mRNA flu vaccine this year.
Rochester Regional Health said: “Because mFLUSIVA is a newly approved vaccine, it has not yet been added to RRH’s offerings and would need to go through the established clinical review and formulary approval process before it could be made available to patients.”
So where can you get the new shot? Emily called CVS and Walgreens. A pharmacist at CVS had not heard about plans to offer the new vaccine. But Walgreens said it will have the new shot, according to a pharmacist at the Culver Road location. News10NBC also checked with the Monroe County Health Department, which does not plan to offer it.
If you want to make an appointment online at Walgreens, the website does not allow you to select the new mRNA flu shot specifically, so you may want to call ahead to make sure they have it in stock.
Cases of flu, RSV, and COVID-19 typically start to rise in the fall. Last year’s flu season was among New York State’s worst on record. In December, the state saw its highest number of flu cases ever recorded in a single week, and hospitalizations soared locally. All visitors at hospitals in Rochester were “strongly encouraged” to wear masks because of the surge.
