NEW YORK — The Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee (GTSC) is holding free statewide car seat safety checks, and some are coming to the Rochester region.
The seat fittings will include certified child passenger safety technicians inspecting car seats for proper installation, appropriateness, and expiration dates.
“Like Governor Hochul, we want to make sure New York is safe for everyone —especially our kids. That’s why we’re focused on getting every child into a safe, properly fitted car seat,” said DMV Acting Commissioner Christian Jackstadt. “I highly encourage parents and caregivers to take advantage of these free car seat checks. It’s a quick, easy way to make sure you have the right seat and that it’s installed correctly.”
According to the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles, an estimated 80 to 90 percent of car seats in the state are incorrectly installed.
To participate in the seat checks, parents and caregivers can visit the GTSC website to find the free Child Passenger Safety Week seat checks by region here. To make an appointment at a car seat fitting site, click here.
If a technician considers a car seat to be unsafe, a replacement seat will be provided for free. In 2025, the GTSC gave out over 6,000 car seats to families.
