Orange County Animal Services has confirmed a positive rabies test on a skunk seen in Mebane Tuesday.
According to OCAS, an initial report was made after the skunk had an altercation with two dogs in the area around Whitaker Road, southeast of downtown Mebane. The skunk was then retrieved for testing, which confirmed the presence of rabies.
“Spotting active wildlife during both the day and night is a normal part of coexisting with nature, but OCAS reminds residents that maintaining a safe distance is essential for community health,” read the OCAS release. “Rabies is a serious viral infection that requires immediate medical attention. Because the virus is fatal without prompt care, understanding exposure risks and taking proactive preventive measures is critical to keeping families and neighborhoods safe.”
OCAS reminds community members that state law mandates all dogs, cats and ferrets older than four months have a current and valid rabies vaccination at all times. People are asked to keep their distance and refrain from approaching wild animals. If an animal suspected of being rabid is alive, residents are asked to notify OCAS while keeping visual contact and not attempt to capture the animal.
The skunk is the sixth confirmed case of rabies in the community in the 2026 calendar year and the first since late May. OCAS offers several low-cost rabies clinics for pet owners throughout the year, with the next scheduled for Oct. 7 in Hillsborough’s Fairview Park.
