Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan's true crime anthology, Monster, has now returned to Netflix with its fourth season – this time turning the focus on its first ever female subject.
Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story centres on Lizzie Borden, the Massachusetts woman accused and acquitted of the 1892 axe murders of her father and stepmother. Rather than just being a simple retelling of the crime and its various theories, the series reframes the case as a story of female rage, repression and revenge.
Ella Beatty leads as Borden following what Netflix described as an extensive search, with Monster season 3 stars Charlie Hunnam and Vicky Krieps also appearing in this latest instalment as well as frequent Murphy collaborator Sarah Paulson.
Talking about the angle of the new season, Beatty told Tudum: "It has been a dream come true to investigate this complicated person’s psychology and to examine an American crime that feels almost mythic in proportion."

About the character: Beatty plays the repressed daughter of a wealthy New England family who enters into an "intoxicating" illicit affair with new maid Maggie. Described as "an icon who refuses to live imprisoned in a cage, choosing instead to forge her own legend: shocking, monstrous, and gloriously free," we see how certain events lead up to the crime in question.
Where you've seen Ella Beatty before: The daughter of Annette Bening and Warren Beatty, Beatty made her screen debut in 2024 in Murphy's Feud: Capote vs the Swans and appeared in the Oscar-nominated Sundance film If I Had Legs I'd Kick You. She also stepped into the Broadway production of Appropriate.
Charlie Hunnam as Andrew Borden
About the character: Hunnam plays Lizzie's wealthy, controlling father, one of the two people found murdered at the Borden home. He was said to be at odds with his daughters, particularly over financial matters and his relationship with their stepmother Abby.

Rebecca Hall as Abby Borden
About the character: Hall plays Lizzie's stepmother, Andrew's second wife, who was murdered alongside her husband. Lizzie and her sister were reportedly wary of Abby, referring to her as "Mrs Borden" and suspected she was solely interested in Andrew's money. In the series, we see how Abby and Andrew's expectations create a lot of pressure for Lizzie.
Where you've seen Rebecca Hall before: Hall gained international attention in Woody Allen's Vicky Cristina Barcelona and won acclaim for playing Christine Chubbuck in Christine. She has also appeared in The Prestige, The Town, Iron Man 3 and Godzilla vs Kong, and made her feature directorial debut with Passing in 2021. She has also starred in The Listeners, The Studio and more recently worked with Murphy on The Beauty.
Vicky Krieps as Bridget "Maggie" Sullivan
About the character: Krieps plays the Bordens' live-in maid, known as Maggie. The series imagines Bridget as Lizzie's co-conspirator and romantic partner, telling Lizzie that her parents "deserve it" as the household's cruelty unfolds.
Where you've seen Vicky Krieps before: The Luxembourgish actress had her international breakthrough opposite Daniel Day-Lewis in Phantom Thread and won a European Film Award for playing Empress Elisabeth in Corsage. She also featured in Old, Hot Milk and, most recently, Monster: The Ed Gein Story.
Billie Lourd as Emma Borden
About the character: Lourd plays Lizzie's older sister. In real life, the sisters lived together for years after the trial before an abrupt rift that saw Emma move out.
Where you've seen Billie Lourd before: A frequent Murphy collaborator, Lourd broke through in Scream Queens and has featured across several seasons of American Horror Story. She also played Lieutenant Connix in the Star Wars sequel trilogy and appeared in Booksmart and The Last Showgirl.
Jessica Barden as Nance O'Neil
About the character: Barden stars as stage and film actress Nance O'Neil, who became a friend of Lizzie's years after her trial and acquittal. Lizzie and Nance's closeness fuelled gossip at the time and was reportedly tied to the falling out between Lizzie and her sister Emma.
Where you've seen Jessica Barden before: The English actress is best known as Alyssa in Channel 4 and Netflix's The End of the F***ing World. Her other credits include Tamara Drewe, The Lobster, Pieces of Her and Penny Dreadful, and she more recently played Young Valya Harkonnen in Dune: Prophecy. She has featured in episodes of Murphy's American Horror Stories and was recently confirmed to be starring in 5's The Cadburys.
Joey Pollari as John Morse
About the character: Pollari plays John Morse, Lizzie's maternal uncle. Based on the real figure, John's presence at the Borden home the night before the murders – despite rarely being in contact with the family after the death of his sister – made him a focus of the investigation.
Where you've seen Joey Pollari before: The American actor is best known for playing Eric Tanner across the second season of ABC's American Crime and Lyle in the coming-of-age film Love, Simon. His other credits include The Obituary of Tunde Johnson, SEAL Team, Sugar and starred as Anthony Perkins in Monster season 3.
Sarah Paulson as Aileen Wuornos
About the character: Paulson appears as serial killer Aileen Wuornos in a flash-forward strand of the series. The season maps a connection between Borden and Wuornos as part of what Beatty called a legacy of female rage that Murphy and Brennan wanted to explore.
Where you've seen Sarah Paulson before: One of Murphy's most frequent collaborators, Paulson is a signature performer of American Horror Story and won an Emmy for playing Marcia Clark in The People v OJ Simpson: American Crime Story.
