Reacher‘s spinoff Neagley introduced plenty of twists and turns — but the biggest surprise might have been Jerry O’Connell‘s surprise cameo.
“He was pretty much our first choice for this,” creator Nicholas Wootton exclusively told Us ahead of the show’s Wednesday, September 16, premiere. “I can’t remember anybody else that we even thought of.”
The first season of the new Prime Video show introduced a concerning drug about to hit the market. A fake commercial showed O’Connell serving as the face of the medication, which allowed the actor to lean into his comedic side.
“Just seeing Jerry O’Connell and how he showed up so ready to roll. He was so funny and a sweetheart of a guy as ever existed,” Wootton gushed. “Man, he just nailed it. Like he was so perfect.”

He continued, “I remember we just started. We’re just like, ‘Oh my god.’ And it was like he got it and he understood it. He got the joke. He understood that this was kind of crazy and wacky in the middle of this show. Nothing but praise for Jerry.”
Reacher, which concluded its fourth season on Wednesday, is based on the Jack Reacher novel series by Lee Child. It stars Alan Ritchson as the main character, a self-proclaimed drifter and former U.S. Army military police officer with incredible strength, intellect and abilities.
Prime VideoDuring his travels, Reacher crosses paths with dangerous criminals and battles them. Neagley (Maria Sten), for her part, was introduced on Reacher before making the switch to her own show.

The first season of her own show, streaming now, focused on Neagley seeking the truth after an old friend died in a suspicious accident.
In addition to Sten, Greyston Holt, Jasper Jones, Adeline Rudolph, Matthew Del Negro and Damon Herriman made up the rest of the cast. But it was O’Connell that captured everyone’s attention on set.
“Jerry was a nice cameo,” Holt told Us. “Stand by me is my favorite movie of all time but I didn’t actually see him. I wasn’t on set when he was there. But just knowing he was a part of it, I was like a little fanboy.”
Jones had a similar experience, saying, “I took a selfie with him at an elevator at Comic Con once.”
Reacher and Neagley are now streaming on Prime Video.
