Former Chicago pastor Ihor Koshyk looked back fondly on Wednesday at memories of flying with George Marciniw, a pilot who was tragically killed the night before in when a news helicopter he was flying crashed in Los Angeles.
Koshyk moved out to Los Angeles after serving as a longtime pastor in Ukrainian Village, he told NBC Chicago. Marciniw was raised in the Ukrainian Catholic church and remained devout throughout his life, Koshyk said.
“He would fly around the church, take a couple pictures, and he would text me, ‘Father, here’s a couple good aerial shots for the Facebook,'” Koshyk said. “That was George, looking for an opportunity to help you.”
While Koshyk said he remembers often seeing Marciniw flying overhead, he also took him up to see the aerial view of Los Angeles for himself.
Provided“He flew us all over the Santa Monica Mountains, then he went over the pacific, Santa Monica Pier,” he said.
Marciniw was “a person who lives and breathes helicopters,” Koshyk said. “He flies so often, he knows every house of every celebrity in Beverly Hills.”
In addition to flying the NBCLA chopper, Marciniw also worked as a flight instructor.
He was killed in the crash that occurred after the news chopper suddenly lost altitude alongside his fellow Angel City Air employee Eliana Moreno, a familiar voice for NBCLA and its Spanish-language sister station Telemundo 52 during the station’s aerial coverage, and 29-year-old Edy Gutierrez Mejia, who was on the ground when the crash occurred.
“They were beautiful souls, bright shining lights in our newsroom, I can’t tell you what a tremendous loss this is,” said Colleen Williams, anchor for NBCLA.
NTSB said they likely will not have a cause for the crash for some time.
