ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Rochester General Hospital is marking 70 years at its Portland Avenue campus.
Hospital leaders and staff, along with community partners, gathered this morning at the hospital for a 1950s-inspired celebration honoring the hospital’s history and ongoing investment in care. Among the guests was Dr. Gerald Holzwasser, who started his internship at RGH in 1956, the same year the Portland Avenue campus opened.
“When they opened up here, I was the first intern to work the emergency room. The emergency room had one intern run the whole show. But, we had a lot of back-ups from other residents,” said Holzwasser.
“It was a very different world when I was there,” he added.
The event reflected on how much has changed since RGH moved to its permanent northside home while looking ahead to the future of healthcare in Rochester.
