HENRIETTA, N.Y. — Triple-A says the average cost of diesel in New York state is $6.26 a gallon, up from under $4 this time last year.
News10NBC’s Garrett Chan spoke with a local trucking company about how rising diesel prices impact its bottom line and how those costs get passed down to consumers. At the Sunoco gas station on West Henrietta Road in Henrietta, diesel is $6.49 a gallon.
“We got about 60 trucks in our fleet, some over the road close to call, some regional, some local. We haul perishables, dry plastics, metals, you know, anything that goes into box trailers,” Alex Voronin said.
Voronin, owner of Lakeville Trucking Inc., said the trucks carry about 300 gallons of fuel. With current diesel prices, it costs about $1,800 to fill up.
“We have to move the freight. So with the customer direct freight, it’s all fuel surcharge. So it gets passed on to them automatically on a weekly basis. It gives us the price per week for that week of the gallon or per mile, and it gets paid for. So obviously customers will see higher cost writing. You know, their product, same line, same thing, but costs will be probably 40% more, maybe 50,” Voronin said.
Garrett tagged along with shop manager Alex Zentsev. They saw one driver filling up his truck at the Sunoco, with hundreds of dollars already spent to fill up the tank.
“Like the most important thing. We used to be using a lot of tires. Oil. That’s the parts we need to change constantly. You can cheap up a little bit on the tires, but again, that’s going to cost out there in fuel costs, fuel efficiency,” Zentsev said.
Zentsev said he tells his drivers to be aware of their fuel usage and to not have the truck idling. “I’m trying to explain to drivers like idling the truck overnight can cost, like up to $50, you know. Plus, we’re counting the time of the loading and unloading, which is you can spend another eight hours. That can be 100 bucks a day just idling the truck,” Zentsev said.
Voronin told Garrett some of his customers have expressed frustrations with the increase in shipping prices. Those companies may delay some of their shipments if the load isn’t urgent or perishable.
The owner of Lakeville Trucking said the company has various fuel cards that can be used at different gas stations so it can take advantage of any discounts and find the best gas prices while out on the road.
