ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The 15th annual Rochester Fringe Festival continues on Wednesday. Organizers celebrated Tuesday’s opening day with a launch party at the Spiegeltent, the iconic show venue at the corner of Gibbs and East Main streets.
Fringe Festival producer and founder Erica Fee says the festival aims to bring new audiences to Rochester’s performing arts scene. The festival features 715 performances, including many free shows, across 45 venues during its 12 days.

“Part of our mission is to bring new audiences into our venues to ensure that we have a healthy artist ecosystem,” Fee said. “The vast majority of the shows are curated by the venues themselves, so all of these venues really have skin in the game. They’re putting their best food forward, so everyone is really excited tonight.”
This year’s acts include music, dance, theater, comedy, film, visual arts, acrobatics, and interdisciplinary arts. The festival runs through Saturday, Sept. 26. It’s considered New York State’s largest multidisciplinary performing arts festival.
Wednesday’s Fringe schedule
Some acts on Wednesday include a production of the comic thriller “Baby Jane, Baby Jane” at the School of the Arts, Blackout Bingo at Blackfriars Theatre, and Cirque du Fringe at the Spiegeltent. There are also free acts such as Bennie Jaye’s “Polishing My Craft”, songs set to poems by Martha Kelch. You can see the full festival lineup and get tickets here.
Guide to biggest free acts
Once again, the festival will feature free, outdoor shows at Parcel 5 on East Main Street. Circus in the City will transform downtown Rochester into a site for acrobatics and dance on Friday, Sept. 18, and Saturday, Sept. 19.
The show will feature multiple nationally and internationally acclaimed aerial groups, including FLIP Fabrique, Aloft, Big Teeth Collective, and 3AM Circus. The show runs from 5 to 10 p.m. both days. You can learn more about each act part of Circus in the City here.
In addition, the Fringe Street Beat, an elite-level breakdancing competition at Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Park, returns on closing day. Three-on-three teams will face off for a chance to win the title of Fringe Street Beat Champions and a $1,200 prize on Saturday, Sept. 26. The preliminary round gets underway at 12:30 p.m., and the finals get underway at 3:30 p.m. It’s free to watch.
