The White Sox reinstated righty Drew Thorpe from the 60-day injured list and optioned him to Triple-A Charlotte, per a club announcement. Thorpe, 25, was the headline prospect in the 2024 trade that sent Dylan Cease from Chicago to San Diego. He posted a terrific 3.03 ERA (albeit with lesser rate stats) through his first seven major league starts before running into trouble.
Thorpe’s eighth MLB start lasted only two-thirds of an inning and saw him surrender eight runs. He was rocked for six runs in five frames his next time out. The White Sox subsequently placed him on the injured list due to a flexor strain. A few weeks later, they announced that Thorpe would undergo surgery to remove a bone spur from his elbow. That ended his season, but the touted young righty was still expected to be ready for action the following spring training — at least initially.
In Jan. 2025, Thorpe told the Sox beat that he’d suffered a setback in his recovery. He received a cortisone injection and was going to be behind schedule when camp opened. Thorpe’s elbow responded well enough to be cleared for a minor league game in mid-March, but he left that appearance early due to renewed pain. Followup tests revealed that he’d suffered a torn ulnar collateral ligament that would require Tommy John surgery.
Thorpe hasn’t pitched in the majors since that 2024 debut. He’s pitched with four minor league affiliates during his late-season rehab work in 2026 and thrown the ball extremely well. Through 36 2/3 innings (24 2/3 of them in Triple-A, the 6’4″, 220-pound righty has a 2.70 ERA, 24.8% strikeout rate, 6.4% walk rate and 53.1% ground-ball rate. He’s never had good fastball velocity — his prospect acclaim stemmed from a plus-plus changeup and plus command — but this year’s 91 mph average four-seamer is right in line with his pre-injury velocity.
Because of all the time on the major league injured list, Thorpe will finish this season with more than two years of big league service time even though he’s only (as of this writing) pitched in nine major league games. It’s possible he’ll add to that total down the stretch, of course. Chicago hasn’t announced any of its starters beyond today’s game (when Anthony Kay will get the ball).
Since Thorpe was just optioned today, he can only be recalled as an injury replacement, but Thorpe last pitched on Sept. 8 (five shutout innings) so he should be fully rested if the Sox want to get him up for a start at some point in the near future. Even if the White Sox don’t want to bring Thorpe to the majors and drop him right into the heat of a playoff chase, he’ll be firmly in the mix for a rotation spot next year, joining Kay, Sean Burke, Luis Castillo, Davis Martin, Noah Schultz, Hagen Smith, David Sandlin and any offseason additions to the group.
