Neagley stars explain more emotional spin-off and what sets this show apart from Reacher

As big as Jack Reacher (Alan Ritchson) is, the world built around him in Prime Video's Reacher show has just got a whole lot bigger.

Following four seasons of the flagship series, a new spin-off based around fan-favourite Frances Neagley has finally arrived, putting Maria Sten's stoic hero in a case of her own at last. But why should Reacher fans follow Neagley to Chicago?

As is usually the case with spin-offs like this, Neagley must appeal to those who love the original while also establishing itself as a unique story in its own right. Luckily, this spin-off is more than up to the task, as Sten explained to us just recently at Radio Times.

"We want to start from a place that feels familiar," said Sten. "And I think that happens in the pilot. Then slowly, as the show progresses, we develop a different kind of language, or take chances in the show that you couldn't necessarily do on Reacher."

Sten added: "I think Neagley is probably more emotional than Reacher is as well due to the nature of who Neagley is versus who Reacher is. So that is certainly something that feels different. The arcs of the characters also feel slightly different than how they would on Reacher. And then, of course, the continuation of the same crew with the same characters in the story."

Greyston Holt, who plays a new character named Detective Hudson Riley, dove into the differences between Neagley and Reacher in more detail, saying:

"We certainly honour the DNA of Reacher in that world, but Neagley is its own animal. We lean into a more gritty psychological tone, we deal with a lot, with Neagley's backstory. We find out more about who she is, why she is the way she is, and then we just overall dig into the psychology of our characters a little more."

However, one key aspect that Neagley does share with Reacher still is the emphasis on action. As such, Sten and Holt faced plenty of stunt sequences, including some that were a lot more challenging than others — often surprisingly so.

"The one that was actually very challenging for me," said Sten, "was jumping over the car because it was a late addition that we hadn't planned. They did put me on a wire in case I couldn't clear the car, and the wire sort of sliced into my forearm. I ended up having this weld of a purple bruise as I was continuously jumping over the car multiple times for training."

"But I'm glad that made it into the trailer," she added. "That was a challenging one for me. Like surprisingly challenging because it's not the most complicated moment at all in the show."

Holt faced a very different kind of challenge in his trickiest stunt.

"It was a sequence where we're running under the L train in Chicago. We shot it over this whole neighbourhood, and it was particularly hot. I run hot naturally. I'm a sweaty guy, but running in 30 degrees… It was humid."

Holt continued: "I'm in a suit, leather jacket, and I also have big thighs [Laughs]. So I blew the crotch out of I think four pairs of nice Canali. They put me in a beautiful suit, and I think we blew the budget on the suits that day. That was hard. Running in the heat in a leather jacket is just not for me. And dress shoes. And a holster."
